OSHA reference: 29 CFR 1926.501

Falls are the leading cause of death in construction. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.501 requires fall protection any time you are working at 6 feet or more above a lower level. That includes leading edges, holes in the floor, roof work, scaffolds above 10 feet, and excavations 6 feet or deeper. Six feet is not a suggestion, it is the trigger.

Before the crew goes up, check your anchor points. A proper anchor must hold 5,000 pounds per worker attached, or be part of an engineered system rated at 2:1 safety. Inspect every harness, lanyard, and connector before every use. Look for cut webbing, burned fibers, deformed D-rings, and damaged stitching. If you find any of these, take the gear out of service and tag it.

Your personal fall arrest system is only as good as your rescue plan. A worker hanging in a harness can develop suspension trauma in under 15 minutes. Talk through how the crew will get a fallen worker down quickly. Know who is calling 911, who is grabbing the rescue ladder or retrieval device, and who is staying with the suspended worker.

Guardrails, safety nets, and PFAS are the three approved systems. Pick the one that fits the task and use it correctly. No exceptions, no shortcuts, no 'just this once.'
