Frequently Asked Questions

What are some tips for accurate takeoff counts?

Work room by room or grid by grid, not free-form across the whole sheet, or you will double-count or skip items. Mark each counted symbol on your reference (digital highlight, colored pencil on a print). Count from one corner and progress in a consistent direction. Double-check totals by spot-counting one room and comparing to your tally. Cross-reference the symbol legend on the drawing every time you start a new sheet, especially on plans from multiple consultants.

When should I use formal takeoff software instead?

A click-counter is fine for small jobs (single-family, small remodels) and quick sanity checks on larger ones. For commercial jobs above roughly $250k, a dedicated takeoff tool like PlanSwift, OnScreen Takeoff, Bluebeam Revu, or STACK pays for itself on the first big bid: it tracks length and area in addition to counts, lets you save assemblies (e.g. an "outlet" that includes box, wire, plate, and labor), and exports directly to estimating software. The counter is for speed; takeoff software is for completeness.

Do I count fixtures or rough-in?

Both, but separately. The rough-in count (boxes, conduits, water lines, drains) usually matches the symbol count on the electrical or plumbing plan. The trim or fixture count may be on the same plan, on a fixture schedule, or on the interior elevations and reflected ceiling plan. Keep two categories ("Outlet rough-in" and "Outlet device") because they price and labor very differently. Same logic for plumbing: rough-in stub vs. fixture set.

How do I track counts across multiple floors?

Save one takeoff per floor or per drawing sheet using the name field ("Level 1 - power plan", "Level 2 - power plan", and so on). Each saved takeoff keeps its own categories and totals, so you can come back and view each independently. To get a building total, copy the individual totals from the saved list into your estimate spreadsheet, or load each takeoff in turn and screenshot the grand total. A future version of this tool may add a building-total roll-up.
