Where the numbers come from
Every figure on this page is read out of the site’s price dataset at build time — the same file that drives the material price index. That file is produced by the Buildermuse price ETL, which pulls Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index series and FRED data and falls back to bundled seed values for anything the live APIs do not return. The file labels itself live+seed for exactly that reason, and each material prints its own source string at the bottom of its panel: a BLS series for some, a manufacturer or distributor survey for others. Read that line before you quote the number to anyone.
Reading a panel
The tool is built for one decision: you are weighing two substitutable products on a bid and want to see level, momentum, and direction for both at once. Three quick-compare buttons load the pairs that come up most often — copper against PEX, steel stud against wood framing, spray foam against fiberglass batt — or you can build any pairing yourself from the two dropdowns. Pick a material in each dropdown and the panel below it fills in with the name, the current value and its unit, the period the value belongs to, a month-over-month badge, a year-over-year badge, a sparkline of the stored history, and the source. The color convention is a buyer’s: rising prices render red, falling prices green, flat grey. The sparkline only draws when a material has more than one stored point, and history depth varies — some materials carry two years or more of monthly points while others carry about a year — so a short, calm-looking line can mean a short series rather than a stable price. The selector groups 34 materials into Lumber & Wood, Steel & Metal, Concrete & Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical, and General Construction. A separate group of composite indices in the dataset is deliberately kept out of the dropdown.
The trend callout
When both panels are filled and both materials have a year-over-year figure, the tool compares them. If the gap is more than one percentage point it prints a banner naming the material with the higher year-over-year number and showing both figures. Because it ranks on the higher number, read the two percentages themselves rather than the wording when both materials happen to be falling.
Normalize the units before you conclude anything
The Copper vs PEX preset demonstrates the biggest trap on the page: the two panels do not share a unit and the tool makes no attempt to reconcile them. Copper pipe is carried per linear foot; PEX tubing is carried per 500-foot coil. If the coil panel reads $198, the comparable figure is 198 ÷ 500 = about $0.40 per linear foot, and you have to do that division yourself before the two numbers mean anything next to each other. The percentage badges are safe to compare directly — if copper reads +16.8% year over year and PEX reads +4.8%, the 12.0-point gap clears the banner threshold and copper gets named — but the levels are not. Always check the unit line under each price first.
What this is not
It is a price reference, not an estimate. Nothing here carries regional adjustment, delivery, waste, or labor, and a material that wins on unit price can easily lose on installed cost once crew hours are priced in. Use it early, when you are still deciding between two substitutable products, then carry the trend forward across a long-lead schedule with the material escalation calculator and record what your suppliers actually charged in the unit price book, which beats any national series for bidding your own market.

Are these live supplier quotes?
No. The page reads the site price dataset at build time and shows whatever was in that file when the site was last built. Buildermuse is a static export, so nothing refreshes while you sit on the page, and none of it is supplier-specific or region-specific. Treat the figures as a national reference series for direction and magnitude, then price the actual job from your own supplier numbers.
Why do the two panels show different dates?
Each material carries its own period stamp, printed under its price, and the header separately shows the dataset period. Entries refreshed from live BLS Producer Price Index series can sit several months ahead of entries still carrying their seeded value. Check both stamps before you read anything into a level difference — a comparison can straddle two different months without warning you.
Why is one material shown as an index instead of a dollar price?
Four entries in the dataset are Producer Price Index series rather than transaction prices, and their unit reads "index" instead of a dollar unit. An index level is a number relative to a base period; it is not comparable to a dollar figure in the other panel. For those materials, use only the month-over-month and year-over-year percentages and ignore the level entirely.
Why did the trend callout not appear?
The amber banner above the panels has two conditions: both materials must have a year-over-year figure, and the gap between those two figures must be greater than one percentage point. If the two materials are moving at similar rates, the banner stays hidden on purpose rather than declaring a winner on noise.
